On January 18, 2025, under the dedicated guidance of VISTA members Angela, Marty, Marcy, Rolfe, and Jennifer, a remarkable day of community gardening took place. The event, enriched by the enthusiastic energy of Sickles High School's National Honor Society student volunteers, showcased VISTA’s hands-on approach to education and environmental stewardship. Their involvement not only improved our community garden but also imparted valuable lessons in sustainability and conservation.
The day’s accomplishments were extensive. Volunteers emptied the soil bin to make room for fresh mulch, relocated and leveled the portable potty for future use, and repaired a rip in the compost canopy to protect our nutrient-rich compost. They also transferred compost from overflowing trash cans into the bin, managed waste, and promoted a circular economy within the garden.
USF student volunteers joined VISTA members on January 19, racing against forecasted thunderstorms. Elizabeth and Gail led a team of six students in removing invasive grasses and trees, and clearing debris from the October hurricanes. Meanwhile, Rick, Deb, and Roberta, along with two students, began transplanting and reinstalling poles for bird feeders and birdhouses, preparing the garden for the upcoming nesting season in February. Undeterred by rain, eight USF students—half of whom represented the campus Rotaract Club—tackled additional invasive tree and grass removal and further debris clearing. Notably, Deb’s swift work led to the planting of Pineland Heliotrope and Black-eyed Susan just before thunder and lightning sent everyone to shelter. Although our time in the garden was brief, many volunteers expressed their eagerness to return, “rain or shine.”
Additional tasks included up-planting herbs for the community’s herb garden, cleaning out four birdhouses to foster healthy wildlife habitats, and tending to unruly tomato plants to promote better growth. A spirited 15-minute weeding contest brought friendly competition to the forefront, with the “Chopped Chin Lore” team emerging victorious by pulling the most weeds.

Overall, the volunteer efforts not only enhanced our garden's physical space but also deepened the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship. VISTA extends heartfelt thanks to every member and student volunteer whose energy and dedication have made a lasting impact on our community.
