For those who missed the irrigation workshop, here are some pointers to getting started with installing your own system:
1. Decide if you want a spray or a drip system. A spray system can provide better coverage, but can cause rot/fungal problems and can waste water if not set up properly. A drip system is great for conserving water, but can be trickier to initially set up.
2. If you are completely new to irrigation systems, start with a kit available at most hardware stores. You can purchase additional components as needed. Be sure to purchase an irrigation timer as well.
3. You will also need to purchase pipe components to connect the water pipe at the foot of your plot to your irrigation kit system. Everyone must install a shut off valve! The water pipe is 1/2 inch threaded PVC pipe and your timer will most likely be a 3/4 inch Garden Hose Thread. There are many configuration possibilities for this portion of the system, so look at what your neighbors have before heading to the hardware store.
4. Remember to shut off the main water line before you start your install. Each row has its own main shut off valve.
5. Once you have installed, it is recommended that you set your timer to water in the morning between 8:30 - 10:30am.
